China Daily dials up iPhone application

China Daily's iPhone application, which was released on Sept 6, entered Apple's App Store over the weekend, making it the first Chinese print media to tap the world's largest mobile application software store.

A bridge connecting China and the world, the China Daily iPhone application is designed to let international audiences access the latest information and photos of China wherever they go.

Specifically designed to utilize the features and navigation of the iPhone, this application syncs and downloads the latest news from China and the rest of the world directly to the device.

Apart from iPhone operating system, China Daily has also made application software based on Symbian, Blackberry and Windows Mobile operating systems. That means cell phone users of iPhone, Nokia, Blackberry, Sumsung and Motorola in about 200 countries and regions will be able to access the latest information provided by China Daily in a wide range of topics, such as culture, finance, tourism and entertainment.

Zhu Ling, editor-in-chief of China Daily, said: "App stores provide our mobile section with a new communication channel, through which we can let the rest of the world know about China in a faster, more efficient way."

To enlarge its readership, China Daily has made great efforts in recent years tapping mobile audiences. Its bilingual mobile news service, which was launched last year, has a nation-wide subscription of 500,000 and is the fastest growing mobile paper in China.

On Aug 8, it started to provide audio information, becoming the first to do this in the country. In June, China Daily's English mobile website, m.chinadaily.com.cn, was put into use, becoming available for cell phone users around the world.
