Cloud Foundry Foundation, a platform which offers the most widely adopted open source cloud technologies in the world, is partnering with Alibaba Cloud and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd to expand its influence in China.

Under the partnership, Cloud Foundry is available on Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Alibaba Cloud, the largest cloud infrastructure provider in China and among the three largest globally, also announced that it has joined the foundation as a gold member.

Huawei, the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor in terms of shipments, has also joined the independent open source platform.

“We are having conversations with all of the other major public cloud providers, like Baidu Inc and Tencent Holdings Ltd, in China,” said Abby Kearns, executive director of Cloud Foundry.

Originally conceived in 2009, Cloud Foundry is a mature and growing cloud application platform used by large enterprises to develop and deploy cloud-native applications, saving them significant amounts of time and resources. Enterprises benefit from the consistency of Cloud Foundry Application Runtime across a variety of distributions of the platform, thanks to a certified provider program.

According to Kearns, Cloud Foundry has the advantage of being a mature and stable platform that is run by organizations around the world. Half of the Fortune 500 companies ran on top of the platform.

As Chinese companies scramble to embrace cloud solutions, the independent open source platform is hoping to grow is influence in the promising market.

“From my experience these years, Chinese companies are very interested in open source and very desire to be part of open source foundations and open source communities. I have been really excited to have so many great conversations in China,” Kearns said.

Hong Tang, chief architect of Alibaba Cloud, said “Being the first open source Platform as a service offering, Cloud Foundry is designed for multi-cloud, multi-framework and multi-languages.”

“Alibaba Cloud commits itself to providing more choices for our customers and is, as always, dedicated to the open source community,” Tang said.
