Editor's note: The ongoing yellow vest campaign, the largest protest since 1968 in France, has not only shaken the ruling foundation of the Emmanuel Macron administration, but also shed light on the complexity of France's needed reforms. Columnist Song Luzheng comments in a post published by Guancha.cn:

If Macron's reforms fail, the ethnic conflicts in France will be intensified, and the ultra-Right politicians are more likely to take power in the presidential election three years later.

Nobody wants his or her income affected in the redistribution of interests. Instead some even want to increase their revenue. The only way to make everyone happy is to borrow new loans, although France's debt already outweighs its gross domestic product.

Because of the high costs of bringing up a baby, France has suffered from a low birthrate for a long time. Despite this the French are extremely vigilant of any policies that might open the country's door to immigrants and refugees.

Another unfavorable factor for France's reform is its less-than-ideal external environment. The United States' unilateralism and the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union mean France cannot continue to rely on its traditional allies, and Germany has not the capability for the time being to help France to overcome the current difficulties.

Minister of the Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire told the news conference after a high-level financial and economic dialogue with Chinese officials and entrepreneurs in Paris on Dec 7 that France is happy to defend multilateralism with China based on the principle of reciprocity.

This is an important declaration of the French government on Sino-France cooperation at a crucial moment when both sides need support.

If France takes the opportunity to further improve its ties with China, it will reap more tangible benefits from bilateral win-win cooperation, which will undoubtedly help the Macron administration pull through the testing times.
