The eighth meeting of the Central Leading Group of Comprehensive Deepening Reform, which was held on May 29, approved a pilot program of reforms for an energy revolution in Shanxi province.

As the main national coal producing area and energy base, the province is required to make efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of its energy supply system, build a clean and low-carbon energy use model, promote energy technology innovation, deepen reform of its energy system, and strive to become the leader of the national energy revolution.

Shanxi should make breakthroughs in energy technology, deepen reform of its energy system and expand foreign competition in its energy market, in order to lead national energy revolution.

Through reform, Shanxi province is expected to provide replicable institutional experience for other major energy bases and old industrial bases.

Official statistics show that in 2018 Shanxi province had eliminated 30.9 million tons of coal overcapacity and shut down coal-fired power plants producing 2.03 million kilowatts of electricity. Meanwhile, Shanxi province's photovoltaic power generation scale ranked first nationwide last year and the province has accelerated its hydrogen energy industrial layout.
