A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Tuesday warned the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan the mainland will be compelled to take resolute measures if the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence" make coercive provocations or even cross the red line.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the DPP authorities have stubbornly adhered to the position of "Taiwan independence", challenged the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and attempted to change the status quo position that both sides of the Straits belong to one China.

The DPP's support for "Taiwan independence" will only bring more tension and instability to the Straits and disaster to the people on the island, she said.

The remarks were made after the DPP authorities stressed the United States has "commitment to Taiwan" and opposes "unilateral change of the status quo" across the Taiwan Straits after a talk between the top leaders of China and the US on Tuesday.

President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden on Tuesday morning held in-depth communications and exchanges over fundamental issues concerning bilateral ties as well as important issues of common concern during a virtual meeting.

President Xi stated China's position on the Taiwan question. He noted the new wave of tensions across the Taiwan Straits and ascribed them to repeated attempts by the Taiwan authorities to look for US support for their independence agenda, as well as the intention of some US people to use Taiwan to contain China.

Such moves are extremely dangerous, just like playing with fire. Whoever plays with fire will get burned, Xi said.

The one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques are the political foundation of China-US relations. Previous US administrations have all made clear commitments on this question, he said.

The true status quo of the Taiwan question and what lies at the heart of one China are as follows: there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China, he said.

US President Joe Biden reaffirmed the US government's long-standing one-China policy and stated the US does not support "Taiwan independence".
