Guo Wei, a young member of the Communist Party of China, answered the call to protect the country he loves when he was needed most. He joined the CPC 10 years ago, a choice he says has made him more mature and stronger. Guo was born and raised in Yunnan and studied Chinese traditional medicine. Shortly after graduating, he was recruited to the army as a medic. He was soon serving on the Mekong River, between Myanmar and China, and served in four other Asian countries as well. With instability and drug trafficking in Myanmar, the police on the Mekong River are the first line of defense in China to protect the country against contraband and violence.

Guo says he has had to respond to many kinds of emergencies. In 2018 a debris flow struck Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture in Yunnan. It was difficult to bring in help and supplies from outside the disaster area because many roads were badly damaged. Guo and his teammates had to get in all the relief supplies by walking about 10 kilometers over difficult terrain. Guo talks of a moment that he thought was possible only in movies, an old man turning to him and saying, "I can't tell you how relieved I am to see you." Such moments make his hard work worthwhile, Guo says.
