Under the shadow of hot and cold wars, with the post-World War II global governance regime in danger of collapse amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry, there are increasing concerns about major countries rolling back commitments to international cooperation on global challenges such as poverty eradication, climate change and biodiversity loss.

As Western nations drag their feet on honoring their commitments, China has shown the world it is doing the opposite. And nothing has distracted the country from its dedication to multilateral cooperation. It has kept its nose to the grindstone, faithfully fulfilling international commitments, showing the rest of the world its vision of a community with a shared future for humanity is no empty talk.

Over the past four decades, by the World Bank's poverty line prior to September 2022 of $1.9 per person per day, the number of poor people in China declined by nearly 800 million. Lifting so many people out of extreme poverty has been a tremendous contribution to the global cause of poverty alleviation, as it accounted for almost 75 percent of the people lifted out of poverty over the same period worldwide.

As the world's second-largest economy and biggest developing country, China has undertaken its due responsibilities as a major country in coping with climate change, participating in global climate and environmental governance.

After announcing its ambitious carbon peaking and neutrality schedule, and fulfilling its climate action goals for 2020, China has set new Intended Nationally Determined Contributions targets. It is steadily proceeding with its energy structure adjustment, strictly controlling carbon emissions, and building the world's largest carbon market. More important, it has also assumed the role as a proactive advocate for building a fair and just global climate governance system featuring win-win cooperation.

The country's achievements are equally conspicuous when it comes to biodiversity. More than 20 laws and regulations have been enacted or revised over the past decade to boost biodiversity protection. While aggressively implementing the Convention of Biological Diversity and the corresponding Protocol, the country has been the biggest donor to their implementation since 2019.

Meanwhile, the government has incorporated the philosophy of green development into the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting environmental and ecological awareness and good practice all over the world. One step at a time, the country is creating all-win scenarios in tackling global challenges, demonstrating the benefits of real multilateralism.

And how to better sustain these efforts is expected to be a key agenda of this year's two sessions that will kick off over the weekend.
