China's renewable energy capacity has grown faster than any other nation's for years.

But during the dark winter of COVID, China hit the accelerator – adding as much wind power in two years as it had in the previous seven.

Last year, China invested $546 billion dollars in green energy, far more than any other country. Its renewables capacity grew as much as the rest of the world combined.

This week at the Boao Forum for Asia's Plenary Session, Fortescue Metals Group's Executive Chairman, Andrew Forrest, encouraged China to accelerate its renewables growth even further – to 500 GW per year between 2026 and 2030 – and effectively achieve zero emissions in the 2030s.

China's advances in automation are leading the world in solving the renewable energy riddle – enabling the pace of change we need.

China is now in a unique position to lead the rest of the world to defeat global warming, while quickly increasing the standard of living of every Chinese person.

With China's unrivalled capacity for green technology, for manufacturing, for automation and acceleration, the world will be able to halve its emissions by 2030.

China alone can rapidly deliver the enormous amount of green technology and equipment the world needs in months and years – rather than years and decades.

Fortescue Metals Group has committed to eliminating emissions on its mining sites by 2030.

We are evolving quickly to become a global green energy, green metals and green hydrogen business – to drive the decarbonization of the aviation, mining, steel and fertiliser industry.

The world can decarbonise and do it profitably – but cooperation and collaboration will be critical between all countries.

President Xi once said: "People live in the same global village, in the same space and in the same time, where history meets the reality of the present. A community with a shared future for mankind has emerged in which everyone is dependent on everyone."

Last week, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) signed an agreement with the Department of Commerce in Hunan Province to establish green technology and green energy supply chains between Australia and China, and to assist in funding opportunities to supply green hydrogen and green ammonia.

Under this agreement, both parties will commit to exploring opportunities to create industrial parks in Hunan Province and manufacturing and assembly plants in Australia.

China is leading the world on climate action and already provides the rest of the world with great hope.

Let the green energy revolution be a beacon of collaboration for the global community – led by China, and its immense capacity for acceleration and delivery, we can defeat global warming.
