Ever since the Indian prime minister "revealed" his nation's aspiration of hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, there seems to be a positive vibe and optimism sweeping across the country.

Experts say that India represents Asia, and has readiness to host the event powered by its huge population and rising economy, which is also bolstered by the team of India's stellar performance at the 2023 Asiad in Hangzhou earlier this month.

"Other than this being a matter of India's ambitions and capabilities for hosting summer Olympics of 2036 this should also be viewed from perspective of making this even representative of the world we live in," said Swaran Singh, professor for diplomacy and disarmament at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.

He added, "besides India is not just now world's largest population country with rapidly growing visibility in international sports it is also recognised as an emerging hi-tech power and projected to become worlds third largest economy by 2030."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his country's interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics. "India is very excited to organize an Olympics," he said during his address at the opening of the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai over a week ago.

"India will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to organize the 2036 Olympics. This is the dream of the 1.4 billion Indians," he said.

Modi also said that India is interested in bidding for the 2029 Summer Youth Olympic Games. "I am very confident that India will consistently get the support of the IOC," he noted.

The session was also attended by IOC President Thomas Bach as well as some leading sports personalities and functionaries of various bodies, including the Indian Olympic Association.

"There are many reasons why India should bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games," an eminent sports historian in India Gautam Roy told China Daily, "Not only will that boost urban and sports infrastructure, it will go a long way in lifting India's standard across sporting disciplines, not to speak about the potential boost it would give to economic activities."

He added that the tourism sector in particular will receive a huge fillip.

Roy also mentioned India's all-time best performance in Asian Games held in China. While China was the clear leader, India finished fourth in the medal tally with 107 medals, including 28 gold. "Now it is time to make a big jump in what is known as the biggest sporting spectacle on earth," he said.

India will be competing against at least 10 countries, including Poland and Indonesia in their plans. Currently all Olympics slots have been booked till 2032. While Paris will host the Summer Games next year, Los Angeles in the United States will be the venue in 2028. Both the cities had hosted the Olympics earlier. Brisbane has bagged the rights to host the 2032 Games.

Although some express concern that India's social issues such as security and health are widely questioned by the world, Modi also said that India has the infrastructure and organizational capacity to host global events, reported the Times of India.

"Besides the most recent G20 events during India's presidency held in sixty Indian cities vouch for India's convening capacity and about its logistics required for holding summer Olympics," noted Swaran Singh. "Compared to some of the other contenders for hosting summer Olympics for 2036, India clearly stands out as the most deserving to be given this opportunity."

Wang Dehua, an adviser to the South Asian Society of China and a researcher at the Institute of South and Central Asia Studies at the Shanghai Center for International Studies, said, "Although hosting the Olympic Games requires a lot of money and material resources, its attraction is still huge: on the one hand, hosting important international events can greatly enhance the visibility of the country, but also bring economic benefits to the future development of the city."

"India must be ready to spend billions of dollars, but I sincerely believe that the Olympic Games will have a huge multiplier effect on India's economy and global profile," said Bengaluru-based media marketing manager Armadeeo Sengupta.

"Time has come to prove to the world at large that hosting Olympic Games is no longer the sole privilege of Europe and the US. China did it in style in 2008. Now, it is our turn."

Roy also noted China organised the 2008 Games, and "it was a resounding success", and India's hosting event can also bring it enormous economic benefits and global attention.

"I strongly believe, India, one of the fastest growing economies, has all the wherewithal and manpower resources to organise the Games," Roy said.

India hosted the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games, and 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
