The China-Japan ties and the Taiwan question were high on the agenda of the latest meeting between senior Chinese diplomat Liu Jianchao and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Kishida, also president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, met with Liu, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Kishida welcomed Liu-led CPC delegation to Japan.

He said Tokyo is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with Beijing and give full play to the role of various dialogue mechanisms.

The Japanese side is willing to carry out dialogues on a number of unresolved issues, develop mutually beneficial cooperation in relevant fields, and strive to achieve concrete progress and results, he said.

The Japanese leader emphasized that political party exchanges "play a very important role" in the development of Japan-China relations.

The visit of the CPC delegation brings an important opportunity for Japan and China to strengthen exchanges between political parties, and the Japanese side is willing to engage in communication and dialogue with the Chinese side on global issues, he said.

Liu said China-Japan ties have been developing toward stability in general recently, but there are also challenges.

The two countries should work together to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders and strengthen exchanges at all levels, he said.

He emphasized that the two sides should strive to establish an objective and accurate mutual understanding of one another and jointly promote the construction of China-Japan relations that meet the requirements of the new era.

Liu noted that maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait serves the common interests of the two countries, and the Japanese side should strictly abide by the one-China principle and seriously safeguard the political foundation of China-Japan relations.

He also asked Tokyo to properly handle sensitive issues such as the discharge of Fukushima's nuclear-contaminated water into the sea.

The CPC is willing to strengthen exchanges with Japan's political parties to promote the improvement and development of China-Japan relations, Liu said.

China is comprehensively progressing on the Chinese path to modernization, and is willing to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results with Japan to realize common development, he added.
