Chinese authorities secured the capture of three drug-related fugitives in Myanmar, marking a significant development in their ongoing fight against cross-border drug trafficking. The arrests, reported by state media CCTV on Wednesday, were the result of coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies of China and Myanmar.

China's Ministry of Public Security directed joint operations involving border security forces from Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. These efforts, in collaboration with local law enforcement in Myanmar, culminated in the successful apprehension of the three fugitives. They were identified as Sun Qiang (52, Jiangxi), Yan Huanping (55, Hunan), and Mu Chaodong (36, Sichuan).

Chinese authorities had been actively pursuing these individuals for some time. In December 2023, public security departments in several provinces issued rewards for the capture of 10 major drug fugitives, including the three apprehended in Myanmar. Investigations revealed that the individuals had allegedly operated for years in northern Myanmar, smuggling and trafficking large quantities of drugs (over 300 kilograms) into China.

Since 2020, China has actively pursued international cooperation to combat drug trafficking. Joint law enforcement efforts with countries like Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka have resulted in the capture and repatriation of over 420 drug-related fugitives.

Chinese authorities urged remaining drug fugitives abroad to surrender and seek leniency. The Ministry of Public Security reiterated its commitment to intensifying international cooperation and border security measures. They pledged to continue pursuing fugitives in northern Myanmar and dismantle criminal networks operating there.
