A popular costume drama, Sijin (Like Brocade), began streaming on Saturday, with its aesthetic tone deeply rooted in the cultural heritages of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), according to producers.

Produced by the Beijing-based Xixi Pictures, known for hits like Six Sisters and Where Dreams Begin, the new drama, consisting of 40 episodes, features actress Jing Tian and actor Zhang Wanyi as a couple of lovers whose fates are interwoven in a complicated and unlikely way.

Jiang Si, played by Jing, unexpectedly finds herself reborn 10 years before her tragic death at the hands of her lover, acted by Zhang. Determined to save herself and her family, she sets out to change her fate - breaking off a planned engagement, solving mysteries, and mending misunderstandings with her lover, the emperor’s seventh son. Through her efforts, she rewrites her destiny and secures her family’s future.

Although the story is set in a fictional dynasty called Zhou, its settings, costumes, and props are inspired by those of the Song Dynasty. Zheng Xiaoyang, an expert on ancient architecture, has been invited to guide the construction of residential courtyards and gardens.

The prevailing lifestyle and customs of the dynasty are also depicted in the show. For example, certain scenes showcase the “Four Leisure Activities” - burning incense, preparing tea, displaying collected paintings, and flower arranging – a lifestyle cherished by the literati of Song.

Zhang Xiaolong, a renowned expert in ancient etiquette known for the hit Empresses in the Palace, has offered guidance in designing the characters’ etiquette and important ceremonies, such as celebrating auspicious events, for the drama.
