Uber, the world's largest mobility platform, and Chinese autonomous driving company Momenta have selected Munich as the launch city for their joint Robotaxi project, with commercial operations slated to begin in 2026.

Following the launch, local residents will be able to summon Momenta Robotaxi vehicles via the Uber app, offering a safe and reliable autonomous mobility experience.

The announcement, which was made on Monday, marks a milestone in the companies' strategic partnership and sets the stage for a broader rollout of Robotaxi services across Europe.

In May, Uber and Momenta announced a strategic collaboration to bring autonomous vehicles to Uber's platform outside the US and China.

Munich, a historic hub of Germany's automotive industry and innovation ecosystem, holds a pivotal role in Bavaria and the country's broader automotive landscape.

The city has cultivated a world-class automotive ecosystem and is known for its openness to novel mobility solutions.

Momenta already maintains deep, stable partnerships with German premium automakers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Germany has shaped the global auto industry for more than a century, and now Munich will help define the future of autonomous vehicles, said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

Momenta CEO Cao Xudong said, "Launching L4 autonomous driving in Munich gives us the opportunity to demonstrate how Momenta's AI-driven Robotaxi technology can transform urban mobility while writing a new chapter in the city's rich automotive history."

Unlike many industry Robotaxi programs, Momenta repurposes mass-production vehicles for its Robotaxi fleet, employing a unified software architecture and sensor setup across L2 and L4 systems.

This approach accelerates scalable deployment and enables a faster commercial loop. To date, over 400,000 vehicles equipped with Momenta's intelligent driving system are in operation.
