China Southern Power Grid announced that its "West-to-East" power transmission volume reached a record 261.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025 — a significant milestone that underscores the country's success in rebalancing energy loads between its resource-rich western provinces and the industrial hubs of the east.

This annual figure represents an increase of 31 billion kWh compared to 2020 levels, highlighting the rapid expansion of high-voltage infrastructure over the past five years, it said.

Throughout the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25) period, the utility's cross-regional channels delivered a cumulative 1.14 trillion kWh of electricity. This massive transfer of power has provided a powerful impetus for China's green development, effectively replacing the consumption of 330 million metric tons of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 860 million metric tons, it said.

To ensure energy security and maintain a stable supply, the utility plans to move toward a more market-oriented framework by organizing flexible inter-provincial mid-to-long-term trading and conducting routine power exchanges across different operating zones.

Furthermore, CSG will enhance the grid's operational resilience by leveraging the flexible regulation capabilities of pumped hydro storage, new energy storage systems, and virtual power plants to optimize resource allocation nationwide.
