China says export controls aim to prevent Japan's remilitarization

China's decision to tighten export controls on dual-use items to Japan is aimed at curbing Tokyo's attempts at remilitarization and nuclear armament, the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday, adding that China's decision is entirely "legitimate, reasonable and lawful".

"China remains committed to maintaining the stability and security of global industrial and supply chains," said He Yadong, spokesman for the ministry at a news conference. "Civilian applications will not be affected, and relevant parties engaged in normal civilian trade have no cause for concern."

On Tuesday, China announced an immediate ban on the export of dual-use items to Japan in response to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks hinting at the possibility of military intervention in the Taiwan Strait.

Takaichi's erroneous remarks have infringed upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, flagrantly interfered in China's internal affairs, and issued military threats against China, He said.

Since assuming office, Takaichi has pushed for three updated documents on Japan's security and defense policies, with individuals close to her making public statements advocating nuclear armament.

These actions reflect an attempt to challenge the bottom line of the international community and expose Takaichi and Japan's right-wing forces' consistent misguided positions and persistent ambitions to advance remilitarization, He said.

Such actions challenge the post-war international order and are bound to undermine regional peace and stability, jeopardizing global peace and security, He said.

He stressed that China, as a responsible major country, has always actively fulfilled its international non-proliferation obligations.

In accordance with laws and regulations, China strictly prohibits the export of dual-use items to military users, for military purposes, or any other end-use related to enhancing Japan's military capabilities, He added.
