VW remains China's best-selling foreign carmaker

German carmaker Volkswagen Group delivered 2.69 million vehicles in China in 2025, retaining its position as the country's top-selling international automaker amid intensifying competition and sustained price pressure.

While deliveries declined 8 percent year-on-year, Volkswagen said the performance met its internal expectations.

It delivered more than 2.57 million ICE vehicles in China, securing a market share of over 22 percent, and its namesake Volkswagen brand was the most popular ICE marque in the country in the year.

The result was achieved in a market characterized by more than 100 automotive brands and aggressive pricing across segments.

Volkswagen Group said it maintained its "Value over Volume" strategy, prioritizing structural stability and profitability rather than pursuing short-term volume growth.

As part of this approach, the group strategically emphasized higher-margin internal combustion engine models while preparing for the rollout of locally developed electrified vehicles.

In 2025, the group entered what it described as "delivery mode", launching a new generation of locally tailored electrified and intelligent connected vehicles.

China also became a base for Volkswagen Group's exports. In 2025, the group shipped the first batch of vehicles from China to the Middle East, formally launching its export strategy.

Building on this initial step, Volkswagen Group plans to expand exports together with its local joint venture partners, targeting high-potential markets across ASEAN, the Middle East, Central Asia, Latin America and Africa.

In 2026, the group plans to launch more than 20 fully electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extended models in the Chinese market.

These vehicles will be equipped with advanced battery and electrification technologies, intelligent connectivity and driver assistance systems.

Backed by the expanded new-energy portfolio, Volkswagen Group aims to increase the share of NEVs in its China sales while maintaining its position as the leading international automaker in the market.
