As temperatures steadily rise, the melting Xingkai Lake in Mishan, Heilongjiang province, has begun welcoming the vanguard of returning migratory birds.
On March 6, monitoring personnel first spotted migratory birds around the lake, including a dozen white-tailed eagles and two Steller's sea eagles, both of which are national first-class protected animals. The first migratory birds arrived three days earlier than last year.
On Monday and Tuesday, nearly 10,000 wild geese gathered at the lake, circling at low altitudes or resting and foraging on the ice. A few falcated ducks and mallards have also arrived to forage on small patches of open water.
