Transport: Two rails to be built

Updated: 2006-03-14 10:19 China announced Monday it will spend US$22 billion to build two of the world's most ambitious railway-building projects the nation's second magnetic levitation train and a high-speed railway linking Beijing and Shanghai. (AP) The Chinese government granted preliminary approval for the construction of a second Transrapid high speed train line, allowing negotiations over the project to continue. (DPA News Agency) The European parent of the maker of Airbus aircraft is considering manufacturing some planes in China, but a top executive said today that the company will not make a final decision until summer. (Irish Examiner) China Southern Airlines Co, one of China's three biggest carriers, said Monday it carried 3.43 million passengers in February, up 4.2 percent from the same month last year. The airline, based in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, reported a 21 percent increase in cargo volume to 48,820 metric tons from the same period last year.
