The country's top political adviser Jia Qinglin said yesterday China will stay firmly on the path of peaceful development and pursue a strategy of mutual benefit and win-win progress.

"China will continue to support the International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (IAESCSI) and work with other members of the international community to build a world of durable peace and common prosperity," Jia told the 10th International Meeting of IAESCSI in Beijing.

The government has set a goal to double its 2000 per capita GDP by 2010 by improving the mix of economic sectors, raising efficiency and reducing consumption of energy and resources.

By 2010, energy intensity will be reduced by 20 percent, and forest coverage will grow from 18.2 percent in 2005 to 20 percent, Jia said.

Earlier this month, the government issued its National Climate Change Program, which calls for the adjustment of economic structures and changes in economic growth patterns, improving energy conservation and energy efficiency.

This year's IAESCSI conference was devoted to the theme of "reinforcing international cooperation, promoting joint development and building a harmonious world".

United Nations General Assembly President Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, praised the IAESCSI for its progress in recent years on the economic and social development of various countries and regions.

"The theme of the Beijing meeting, which matches the UN's principles and objectives, is of such a nature as to reflect the aspirations of the peoples of the world," she said.

"The partnership among regional organizations is also very important to facilitate common prosperity second to nation-to-nation cooperation."

The conference also adopted the Beijing Declaration yesterday, which calls for the strengthening of regional and economic cooperation and improving links between international institutions.

"Developed countries should do more to boost economic growth and take concrete measures on such critical issues as poverty eradication, financial assistance, debt forgiveness and public health to help with the faster growth of developing countries," the document said.

"It should work to meet the 0.7-percent target of GNP as Official Development Assistance by developed countries."

The president of the next IAESCSI, Walfrido Mares Guia of Brazil, said the declaration was "up to date".

"I think it is a high-level commitment from the IAESCSI to push social and economic development with equity."
