China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF), the nation's largest technology show, will highlight new and emerging industries this year in attempt to address community demands for industrial transformation.

Featured sectors will include energy-saving and environmental protection technologies, new-generation information technologies, biotechnology, high-end equipment manufacturing and new energy vehicles. Since its debut in 1999, CHTF has been widely accepted as the most influential State-level platform for international technological and economic exchange.

It has helped nurture a number of Chinese fledging IT companies including Tencent, provider of China's instant messaging tool QQ.

The slogan for this year's fair is "Technology-led Transition and Innovation-driven Development." Organizers hope to stress a low-carbon economy and environmentally friendly technologies.

CHTF 2010 will cover 100,000 sq m and feature forums and exchange between senior government officials, scholars, scientists and entrepreneurs. It will also host a variety of expos highlighting IT, electronics, new energy, and environmental protection.

A series of high-profile forums attract large audiences each year.

The Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission hope the fair will accelerate China's new industry development.

The Ministry of Commerce, which has globally promoted products made in China, will have a pavilion in Hall 7 to encourage technological innovation.

Companies from pilot industrial parks and leading low-carbon enterprises from home and abroad were invited to showcase their products and achievements at the pavilion.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology pavilion will emphasize reduced industrial energy consumption and comprehensive utilization.

Ministry officials hope it will enhance efforts to lower emissions and accelerate construction of an energy-saving and environmental-friendly industrial system.

The pavilion will have an energy-saving technologies zone, a clean-production technologies zone, an environmental-protection equipment zone and a resources comprehensive utilization and circular economy zone.

The National Development and Reform Commission pavilion will focus on cultivating and developing strategic emerging industries.

CHTF's previous new energy, energy-saving and environmental protection zone will be upgraded to a fair sub-show this year. The expo will display the latest in scientific achievements.

Organizers have also arranged a summit on new energy and low-carbon development. Senior energy and economy department officials from across the globe have been invited to discuss scientific economic growth, energy utilization and policy- making.

Israeli Minister of Science and Technology Daniel Hershkowitz shared insight with a Chinese official during last year's CHTF.

CHTF 2010 will showcase China's top scientific achievements gained during the most recent five-year plan ending this December.

Projects chosen for display demonstrated a relationship with industrial mass production or the national economy and people's livelihood, said organizers.

Promising new and emerging industries will also be exhibited at CHTF. The fair will host economic, investment and business forums.

Previous forums have attracted 12 Nobel Prize winners, more than 70 ministerial officials and 400 transnational corporation CEOs, economists and executives.

This year's seminars will include a high-tech forum, ministerial forum, capital market forum and a Chinese entrepreneurial summit. Global ministers and representatives from securities houses and banks have been invited to share their thoughts on the investment opportunities and risks for emerging industries.

Strong sponsorship

CHTF was approved by the State Council and jointly hosted by Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, Ministry of Agriculture, State Intellectual Property Office, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Shenzhen city government.

Since it began 11 years ago, the fair has attracted more than 36,000 companies from 80-plus countries. It has featured 20,000 investors and at least 120,000 projects.

More than 30 delegations from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia and the European Union have taken part in the event.

Past attendees include 40 transnational corporations such as Microsoft, Oracle, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson. CHTF 2010 will be held Nov 16 to 21 at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center.
