China-Mozambique bilateral relations

1. Political Relations

The ties between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Mozambique have enjoyed smooth development since the two countries established diplomatic relations on Jun 25, 1975.

Important visits by Chinese leaders to Mozambique include : Vice Premier Li Xiannian (Jan.1979), Foreign Minister Huang Hua (Apr.1980), State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wu Xueqian (May 1987), Foreign Minister Qian Qichen (Aug.1989), Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Chen Muhua (July 1990), Vice Premier Zhu Rongji (July 1995), Premier Li Peng (May 1997), Vice Chairman of the Military Commission of the Central Committee, State Councilor and Minister of Defense Chi Haotian (Nov.1998), Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan (Jan. 2000),Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Tian Jiyun(Nov.2000).

Important visits by Mozambican leaders to China include: President Samora (May 1978 and July.1984), President Chissano (May 1988 and Mar.1998), Premier Machungo (Oct.1987 and May 1993), Premier Mocumbi (Oct.1997 and Oct.2002), Speaker Santos (May 1992), Speaker Mulembwe (Sep. 2001), Foreign Minister Chissano (Sep.1983), Foreign Minister Mocumbi (Aug.1990 and Dec.1992), Foreign Minister Simao (Feb.1998), General Secretary of the Liberation Front Party Tome (Jan.1996, Feb.1998 and Mar. 2000), and General Secretary of the Liberation Front Party Guebuza (Apr. 2003). Foreign Minister Simao and Minister of Industry and Trade Morgado were invited to China to participate in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation / Ministerial Conference Beijing from October 10 to 12, 2000.

2. Trade Relations and Economic and Technical Cooperation

China and Mozambique signed Trade Agreement and Agreement on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investment and set up a Joint Economic and Trade Comisson in 2001. China relieved parcially the expired debt of Mozambique which should have been repaid by the end of 1999.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has provided Mozambique with the following assistance-projects: textile mill, passenger-cargo vessel, well drilling and water supply, shoe-making,, clothing factory, parliament building,, housing project for a new military region, etc.. Ongoing projects with the Chinese aid are: international conference centre, office building of Foreign Ministry and fish breeding. Trade volume between the two countries in 2002 reached US$ 48.489 million, of which the export of China was US$ 25.932 million, the import of China US$ 22.557 million.

3. Exchanges in the Fields of Culture, Education and Health

China and Mozambique concluded a cultural cooperation agreement and the two sides sent cultural and educational delegations to visit each other's countries. China offers 5 scholarships to Mozambique annually since 1992. Twenty-two Mozambican students have studied in China during those years. At present 8 Mozambican students are taking their courses in China. According to the protocol on medical and health cooperation between the two countries, China has successively sent 14 medical teams to work in Mozambique. 12 Chinese medical personnel are currently working in Maputo Capital Hospital.

Shanghai and Maputo(Capital City of Mozambique) established sister-city relationship.
