Chen's separatist move denounced(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-09-26 16:09 BEIJING - Leaders of overseas organizations that promote China's reunification gathered here Tuesday to discuss the escalation of separatist activities in Taiwan, denouncing Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian for jeopardizing mainland-Taiwan relations. Liang Jinquan, secretary general of the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification of China (CCPPR), addressed the sixth annual conference of chairpersons of overseas councils for the promotion of reunification of China. He praised the overseas pro-unification bodies for their contributions to the reunification of the country. In the past year, almost 60 pro-unification councils in more than 40 countries and regions had organized workshops and demonstrations and issued declarations to denounce activities that attempted to split China, said Liang. These pro-unification councils had stirred up a wave of anti-independence and pro-unification activities, Liang said. He urged the organizations to continuously and firmly oppose pro-independence forces and make new contributions to the reunification and reinvigoration of the nation. Wang Jinping, chairman of Taiwan Alliance for the Reunification of China, said Chen Shui-bian's UN "referendum" bid was "tremendously dangerous" as it wantonly jeopardized the relations across the Taiwan Strait. However, "the Taiwan compatriots are sober", said Wang. "Chen's attempt of deceiving the Taiwan people with lies will certainly end in failure. "We have already set up an alliance against Chen's UN referendum bid." Shan Sheng, head of the UK Chinese Association for the Promotion of National Reunification, said, "With disregard for Taiwan people's interests, Chen's move has edged cross-Strait relations to a perilous situation."
