Bilateral relations between China and Senegal

1. Political Relations

The People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Senegal on December 7, 1971. The Senegalese Government and the Taiwan authorities signed a communique on "resuming diplomatic relations" on January 3, 1996. Therefore, the Chinese Government announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Senegal on January 9, 1996. China and Senegal resumed diplomatic ties at the ambassadorial level as of Oct. 25, 2005.

Major visits to Senegal paid by Chinese leaders including Vice Premier Chen Muhua (in April 1980), Mr. Huang Hua, Vice Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs (in November 1981), Mr. Peng Chong, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (in April 1982), Vice Premier Li Peng (in June 1984), Mr. Liao Hansheng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (in October 1985), Mr. Li Ruihuan, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (in July 1991), Mr. Qian Qichen, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs (in January 1992) and Vice Premier Li Lanqing (in November 1995).

Major visits to China paid by Senegalese leaders included President Leopold Sedar Senghor (in May 1974) and President Abdou Diouf (in July 1984).

2. Trade Relations and Economic and Technical Cooperation

China had built with its aid the Friendship Stadium and the Bignona Water Conservancy Project.

In 2001, the total trade volume between China and Senegal was US$ 52.932 million, China's export volume totaled US$52.556 million and import US$ 0.376 million.

3. Important Agreements and Documents

On December 7, 1971, Mr. Feng Yujiu, Ambassador of China to Mauritania, and Mr. N'diaye, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Senegal, signed in Dakar the joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Senegal.
