KANDAL, Cambodia - Cambodia's Prek Tamak Bridge over Mekong River was officially inaugurated on Monday after more than three years of construction under preferential buyer's credit loan from China.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue. It was also attended by 3,000 participants, who are top government officials, diplomatic corps, locals and students.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Hun Sen said that including Prek Tamak Bridge, Cambodia has three Cambodia-China Friendship Bridges. The other two are Se Kong Bridge in Stung Treng province and Prek Kdam Bridge in the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

The other two more Cambodia and China Bridges will be built in the near future. To date, more than 1,500 kilometers of roads and bridges have been put in use and are being constructed under the grants and loans from China, he said.

"China is the major donor for roads and bridges development in Cambodia," said the premier. "The bridge is a great treasure for our country and I wish the cooperation between Cambodia and China last forever."

"The progress in Chinese economy is not only serving the inside growth of China, but also benefiting the world as China has foreign policy to help other developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America." ?

Pan Guangxue said that Chinese government sticks to its foreign policy to strengthen and expand good cooperation with neighbors and strongly support poverty reduction.

"China supports Cambodia to develop its economy independently with its ownership," he said.

The 1,066-meters long and 13.5 meters wide bridge had been taken 38 months to complete, one year ahead of the original plan. It was built by China's Shanghai Construction (Group) General Company, costing $43.5 million.

The bridge is located in the distance of 20 kilometers in the east of Phnom Penh. The bridge, connects between national road No 6 and national road No 8, will play an important role for the improvement of the local social-economic development and living standard of the people.
