3rd breakdown in 4 days hits railway

SHANGHAI - China's newly built high-speed railway linking Beijing and Shanghai temporarily ground to a halt again Wednesday, with one of its trains breaking down and hundreds of passengers having to transfer to another train to complete their journey.
The railway has experienced three delays over the last four days. Power failures previously halted 11 trains on Sunday and 29 others on Tuesday.
Wednesday's train breakdown happened at about 10 am at a stop in the city of Changzhou in East China's Jiangsu province, a spokesman with the Shanghai Railway Bureau said. The spokesman did not specify the cause or nature of the breakdown.
Passengers were transferred to another train, delaying their trip by about two and a half hours, the spokesman said.
No other trains were affected, he added.
The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway went into operation on June 30. The 1,318-kilometer railway allows passengers to travel between the two cities in less than five hours.
The railway is designed to handle maximum train speeds of 350 km per hour.
