Snow hinders relief in quake-affected Tibet

Snowy weather and landslides have hindered rescue and relief efforts in quake-affected areas in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Roads, power and communication remain cut off in Rongxar Town, Tingri County in Tibet. Snow drifts reached 10 cm on the road leading to the town, where houses collapsed following the 8.1-magnitude quake in Nepal.

China's relief operation in Nepal

The relief operation for Nepal quake victims is being stepped up here as aid materials and personnel are arriving from neighboring countries including China and India, said officials on Monday.

A 58-strong Chinese Government Medical Team arrived in Nepal Monday morning to carry out a humanitarian mission after the country was struck by a powerful earthquake at midday Saturday.

The medical team comprises experts from medical, pharmacy, osteology, nursing and psychology departments, among others.

Chinese climbers evacuated from Mount Qomolangma

As for Chinese nationals who were climbing Mount Qomolangma, one has died, eight were injured, with two seriously injured, and another one is missing, Xinhua reported Monday.

On Sunday afternoon, all the Chinese climbers injured in earthquake-triggered snow slides on Mount Qomolangma's southern slope were evacuated by helicopters to Kathmandu or Lukla. There are still 30 uninjured Chinese climbers on the southern slope waiting to be evacuated.

Chinese climbers on the northern slope have retreated to 5,200 meters and are in a safe, stable condition, Guangzhou Daily reported.

There are also about 2,100 regular Chinese workers in Nepal.

Four Chinese nationals in Nepal have died, and another ten were seriously injured.

Over in Tibet autonomous region, another 20 residents in Xigaze prefecture have also died, while 58 were injured in the quake.
