Beijing will hold to the principle of "being frugal in running the Olympic Games," in its future preparation for the 2008 Olympics, Beijing mayor Liu Qi reiterated here on Tuesday.

Liu, also president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), made the remarks at the first meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission Tuesday.

After being granted the right to host the 2008 Olympics in July,2001, Beijing made the promise of "being pragmatic and good for post-Games utilization" in the construction of the Olympic venues and related facilities.

"The Olympic venues and related facilities shall not only provide the top quality venues for the Olympic Games, but also forthe development of sports both in China and the rest of the world," said Liu.

Liu said Beijing will also adhere to the "opening-up" policy inhosting the Olympic Games.

"It will contribute to the further opening of the city to the outside world," he added.

In October, BOCOG kicked off public tendering in the construction of sports venues and related facilities.

A lot of specialized foreign institutions and professionals were also involved in the design contest of the Olympic Green and Wukesong Sports and Cultural Complex.

BOCOG will also continue to keep to the principle of "open, fair and transparent" in the preparation for the Games, Liu said.

"To this end, the work of the Olympic Supervision Commission will be further strengthened," said Liu.

During Tuesday's working session on the organization of the 2008 Olympics, IOC Coordination Commission also listened to BOCOG's progress report on construction, sport, Olympic village and services, environment, communication, marketing, accommodation and technology.

The IOC Coordination Commission will wind up its visit Wednesday.
