Shanghai bachelors are becoming increasingly practical in their approach to marriage, with about 70 per cent wanting to marry a "strong woman", reports Shanghai Morning Post.

And they find women who earn monthly incomes of around 5,000 yuan (US$600) especially attractive.

According to marriage agencies throughout the city, more and more bachelors have changed their focus in seeking a spouse from a woman's appearance to her economic might.

It used to be that when single women sought partners, a man's financial situation was more important than his looks or age, while "powerful" women tended to scare men away.

But now the burden of paying for an apartment, a car and the needs of children is often too much for a man to shoulder alone.

By marrying a strong woman, they can share the responsibilities and have a more pleasant life, say the bachelors.
