Afghans say to kill UN hostage if demands not met
A Taliban splinter group holding three U.N. workers hostage demanded a response to its demands from the government and United Nations by Tuesday afternoon and said it would kill one of the captives if they were not met.
"The government is supposed to respond by 3:00 p.m. (0530 EST) today," said Sayed Yar Muhammad Agha, one of several men claiming to speak for the kidnap group, Jaish-e Muslimeen.
"The decision to kill the hostages -- which one first -- will be taken by our Shura (council)," he said. "If our demands are not met, we will kill at least one hostage."
The group has demanded the release of 26 Taliban members, some of whom could be in U.S. military custody, as part of a deal to release U.N. workers Filipino diplomat Angelito Nayan, Annetta Flanigan from Northern Ireland and Shqipe Hebibi from Kosovo.
They were abducted in Kabul on Oct. 28. |
