volcano erupted on the main
island of the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean early Monday, sending
thousands of people fleeing, officials said. No deaths or injuries were
reported.
Lava started flowing out of the 7,746-foot Mount Karthala at 1:30 a.m.,
hours after the volcano started spewing ash and dark smoke over Grand
Comore, the largest of the three Comoros islands, said Bernadette
Ninyaratunga of the United Nations Children's Fund.
A team of experts flew over the volcano to assess the dangers and the
damage caused so far, said Maj. Salimou Mohamed, a spokesman for the
government's emergency team.
Lava意為“火山巖，熔巖”，火山巖是通過火山口或裂縫溢出地表的巖石融化物，冷卻凝固后重新形成巖石。
據悉，科摩羅是世界上最貧窮的國家之一，目前大科摩羅島上的卡爾塔拉火山雖然還未噴發，但已經可以在火山口看到巖漿。聯合國駐科摩羅代表朱塞平納·馬扎說，當地官員已動員卡車和其他車輛前往受火山灰影響嚴重的區域幫助疏散居民。醫療隊已前往受影響地區，幫助那些因為火山灰而出現呼吸問題的人們。
