Beijing has welcomed Pyongyang's announcement that it will return to the Six-Party Talks on its nuclear weapons programme, hoping the involved parties will continue to seek common ground.

"China is willing to work with other parties concerned, including the United States, to play a constructive role in pushing forward the next round of talks," said President Hu Jintao during a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday.

The top US diplomat thanked the Chinese Government for its efforts in helping Pyongyang back to the negotiating table.

"China has played a very active role showing North Korea (DPRK) what the path ahead might look like," she said at a press conference in Beijing.

China helped to organize talks in Beijing late on Saturday between senior officials from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States. These led to an agreement to resume multilateral talks aimed at ending the DPRK's nuclear weapon drive.
