The Chinese Government estimates all the newly constructed tunnels will add up to as long as 1,300 miles in five years with an estimated investment of 500 billion yuan (US$61.64 billion), based on the city transportation plans from 15 cities.

The transportation construction is advancing at a fastest pace ever in China amid the country's rapid urbanization and industrialization, the Xinhua reported on Thursday.

According to the urban transportation construction plans from 15 cities, the total tunnel built in China will reach 1,300 miles in 2010 with an estimated investment of 500 billion yuan).

The population and transportation in the urban area are increasing so fast that ground transportation alone can no longer meet the need of urbanization. The report said tunnel construction has been the best choice for many big cities in China to accommodate a large vehicle capacity with high efficiency and relatively low pollution. Currently, many cities are actively developing a comprehensive transportation mechanism, with the tunnels as the mainstay.

Besides, tunnels have other advantages as they can save land resources, maintain the vividness of central cities, and guide the distribution of urban space and the opening up of new land as well as help the sustainable urban development, according to the report.

Currently, there are 18 tunnel routes covering a total 425 miles in ten cities, while seven other transportation tunnel items totaling more than 400 miles, are under construction.

Three big cities- Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, are building 40 miles of tunnels every year.
