'China's rise an opportunity, not a threat' Tang meets Rice, emphasizing mutual trust Tang Jiaxuan said Wednesday that the Sino-US relationship has progressed quickly in the past years. He met U. S. President George W. Bush on Wednesday at the White House. The Sino-US common interests are now increasing, Tang told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He added that the two countries' constructive cooperation may sail through, provided the two governments stick to the spirit of dialogue and mutual trust, the People's Daily reported. Tang said that cooperation remained the mainstream of the bilateral relationship, though differences existed between them, and sometimes compromises were inevitable. Tang believed that the relationship won't be rocked so long as the two nations follow the principle of seeking consensus, strengthening dialogues, establishing stronger trust, and handling disagreement carefully. "The exchange of visits between top leaders planned for this year carries significant meaning for the stability of the Sino-US relationship," Tang said. Tang says Beijing opposes Taiwan's independence and hoped the United States will strictly keep the promises concerning the Taiwan problem in order to maintain tranquility across the Taiwan Straits. Rice said that Washington would stick to the "one-China" stance. The Sino-US relationship is very important, and in-depth-exchange of views on major international and regional matters between the two parties have played a crucial role in the progress of bilateral ties, Rice said. Tang and Rice also discussed the North Korea nuclear issue and both said they were looking forward to a practical progress in the ongoing Six-party Talks in Beijing.
