Roddick to catch the 'Tennis Tiger'

WASHINGTON: Andy Roddick is working his hardest to catch Roger Federer, but the American tennis star admits that finding the form to dethrone the Swiss world No 1 at the US Open next month is still beyond him.

Andy Roddick
"Roger Federer has a physical and mental advantage over everybody," Roddick said. "He's doing to tennis what Tiger Woods did to golf a few years ago. He is making us all improve."

Roddick's quest to raise his game continues, after a week off, at the US$600,000 ATP Washington Classic here this week, where the 22-year-old is the top seed and Federer is absent.

Roddick joked about how to beat Federer at the US Open - "Punch him" - and said his chances to win the year's final Grand Slam event at New York in four weeks are "as good as anyone not named Roger."

Federer beat Roddick in the 2003 Wimbledon semi-finals, the 2004 Wimbledon final and in last month's Wimbledon final by 6-2, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4. Roddick does not see Federer as simply superior and feels second best to him is not good enough.

"It's not an excuse. I'm not happy Roger is better than me. It's not a crutch," Roddick said. "I come out of that match saying, 'I played pretty well and got beat.' If anything, it makes me work harder.

"I'm doing everything I can to be the best player I can be. I'm working harder than I ever have."
