World No.1 Wang to play at Asian championship despite stiff neck
World champion Wang Liqin will not pull out of the Asian table tennis championship in spite of a neck injury which has prevented him from shaking head or nodding. The world number one, who beat compatriot Ma Lin to claim his second men's singles world title last May in Shanghai, has suffered the injury for a long time due to constant over-training, while the tight schedule of the Super league of China's table tennis worsened the conditions of his vertebra. Chinese team doctor Shang Xuedong Friday ruled out a possibility of Wang's withdrawal due to the injury, but said it could be aggravated if Wang does not take care. "I'll try to reduce the strain on his neck at any time with needle therapy or special massage," said Shang Wang, who arrived at the Jeju International airport in the afternoon,said that he has been told to keep his neck straight for protection. "Hopefully it would not stop me from playing competitive match, but what I can do now is just wait and see,"Wang said.
