Federer downs Agassi to defend Open crown

NEW YORK - Roger Federer defended his US Open title dominating a third
set tie-break to defuse the challenge of 35-year-old Andre Agassi before winning
6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-1. AFP reported.

title-holder looked in difficulty in the third set with Agassi 4-2 up, but he
rallied brilliantly to force a tie-break and doused the Agassi flame by winning
that 7/1.
With the pressure off Federer moved into top gear, and he raced away with the
final set in just 23 minutes..
Federer was the first man to defend the US Open title since Patrick Rafter in
1998 and the first in the Open era starting in 1968 to win both Wimbledon and
the US Open in successive years.
He has now won all six Grand Slam finals he has contested following his three
Wimbledon titles in 2003/2004/2005 and the 2004 Australian Open.
Agassi at 35 lost for the fourth time in a US Open final, but he also won
twice in 1994 and 1999.
In what was a dream climax for the championships, Agassi had more at stake as
he sought a crowning glory to one of the greatest careers in the history of the
sport in his 20th straight appearance in the tournament that means most to him.
