Top seed Nadal makes quick work of first-round opponent
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal sailed into the second round of the China Open on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Taiwan's Wang Yeu-tzuoo, the Associated Press reported. Nadal, the French Open champion, waited two days to take to the court at the Beijing Tennis Center because his opponent Wang was delayed by business in Turkey, organizers had said without elaborating. "Waiting didn't affect my performance at all," Nadal said Wednesday. The Spaniard appeared eager to make up for lost time, sprinting to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set and wrapping up the match in less than 90 minutes. "I performed well in the first game of the first set. It was better than my performance at the U.S. Open. But I lost my concentration later and didn't do well in my later services," he said. Nadal allowed Wang several opportunities to enter the match, but maintained his composure and ensured himself a place in the second round. "This was not a tough match, but I made some mistakes. I wish I can do better in the upcoming matches," he said. Also Wednesday, fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 7-6 (4). Argentina's David Nalbandian, the No. 3 seed, cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Israel's Amir Hadad, earning him a matchup with Ferrero. Carlos Moya of Spain also booked a quarterfinal berth by beating Austria's Stefan Koubek 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sweden's Thomas Johansson was to face Finland's Jarkko Nieminen later Wednesday. Nadal will next face Justin Gimelstob of the United States, who defeated Croatia's Roko Karanusic 6-4, 6-1 on Tuesday.
