President Hu concludes trip in Canada
Hu reminded the audience of an important date next month. "Next month we will celebrate together the 35th anniversary of China-Canada diplomatic relations," Hu said through an interpreter. "Great headway has been made in bilateral ties and the frequent exchanges at various levels." The largely business-oriented gathering was likely encouraged to hear the president tell them that he is "satisfied with the achievements of the robust Canada-China co-operation." "Both sides share the view that the progress in the past 35 years has laid a solid foundation for China-Canada relations." The leader of the world's most populous country said he wanted China and Canada to increase trade and economic co-operation "with a view to bringing two-way trade to over $30 billion US by 2010." While his speech contained no mention of the serious environmental problems that plague China, nor the constant allegations of human rights violations, Hu said his visit had left him impressed with Canada. He also invited Canadians to spend more time - and money - in China. "I look forward to seeing you in China either for sightseeing, investment or business," he said. Martin applauded the growing exchange between Canada and China at many levels, including academics, when he noted that thousands of Chinese students were studying in Canada "and a growing number of Canadians were studying in China."
