Villarreal had to make do without Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme,
who was out with an injured ankle. Villarreal striker Jose Mari Romero Cadiz
scored in the 38th minute and Oli Alvarez equalized for Cadiz five minutes
later.
In the San Mames Stadium, host Athletic Bilbao trailed Malaga 2-1 after goals
from Edgar Carvalho in the 85th and Antonio Hidalgo in injury time. Athletic
Bilbao pulled one back in injury time through Jesus Mari
Lacruz.
