Scholars: KMT, CPC should work for peace, prosperity

The chief staff of KMT's Public Relations Department, Zhang Rong-gong said CPC's congratulation was always sent during the KMT's National assembly and described Hu's congratulation right after the election as "never happened before."

He insisted that this was initiated by Lien's official visit to establish cross-Straits mutual mechanism for a better relationship. He also predicted it is possible for the new chairman, Ma, to have the first cross-Straits exchange during the mainland-Taiwan economic forum to be held next month in Taipei.
An expert from the China International Research Center, Guo Zhenyuan, said the cross-Straits exchange was based not on ideology but on the "one-China" principle and "1992 consensus," so ideology would not be an obstacle. Guo added that Ma would play a more active role in the cross-Straits relationship after he ended his term as the Taipei mayor in December.
And it is completely possible for Ma to officially visit mainland, he said.
Guo said that 72.4 percent of votes going to Ma clearly revealed the strong demand for reform within KMT. He also believed that Ma won over Wang because of younger and fresher image.
A professor from the CPC national strategic research center, He Zhongshan, said the most important political message sent by the result was KMT wanted to be the leading party in Taiwan again and he had a high expectation on Ma. Ma needed to closely cooperate with Wang Yin-pyng to enhance the reform of KMT and to gain people's trust in order to win back power from the Democratic Progressive Party in 2008.
