Man of courage: Last year proved risky for Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon both politically and personally.
His determination to pull Israeli forces and Jewish settlers from Gaza strained relations with his old political allies to the point that he walked out of Likud, the party that he founded in the 1970s, and founded Kadima, a new centrist party that could change the face of Israeli politics.
Sharon then suffered a minor stroke.
