Finn: Hello and welcome to On the Town. We have someone new in the studio today. Let's welcome our new intern, Xu.

Xu: Hi Finn. 大家好，我是許栩。

Finn: And Xu Xu, welcome. I hear that you are a pre-med student.

Xu: Yes.

Finn: Very good. Is this the first time for you to present a programme?

Xu: 是的，第一次做節(jié)目很高興，又有些緊張。

Finn: Oh, you don't need to be worried. Relax, you'll be fine! So, what have you been up to this week? I hear that we have some new words about medicine today.

Xu: That's right. 周三我做了個(gè)有趣的采訪。Shall we hear the first part of my report from the museum?

Finn: Sure! Let's do it!

大家好，今天我們來到一個(gè)與眾不同的博物館，the Hunterian museum, 這是一座位于倫敦市中心的醫(yī)學(xué)博物館，是不是很好奇呢，那咱們一起進(jìn)去看一看吧！My guide today is Sarah.

This is the Hunterian museum. It displays the collections of a man called John Hunter, who was a surgeon in the 18th century. And we have his collections of anatomical specimens; so this is bits of humans and animals which are both healthy and showing diseases.

Xu: 剛才我們聽到的是博物館管理員 Sarah 的講解，其中有一個(gè)詞 'anatomical', 意思是“解剖學(xué)的”。在博物館里有很多解剖學(xué)標(biāo)本 anatomical specimens. 有些是人體標(biāo)本，有些是動(dòng)物標(biāo)本。

Finn: So, is there anything else in the museum besides these anatomical specimens Xu Xu?

Xu: 對(duì)，當(dāng)然啦。我們來聽聽 Sarah 怎么說。

As well as this, we have paintings, and we have surgical equipment, some of which date from the 17th century, right up to the kinds of surgical instruments that surgeons are using in hospitals today.

Xu:除了標(biāo)本，還有很多油畫 paintings 和手術(shù)器械 surgical equipment 或者 surgical instruments.

Finn: Wow, today's words sound a little bit scary Xu Xu.

Xu: 別擔(dān)心，精彩的在后頭呢。

Finn: OK, what are the highlights?

Xu: 你知道溫斯頓丘吉爾演講的秘密嗎？答案就在下面的錄音里。請(qǐng)大家留意一個(gè)新詞，dentures, 意思是假牙。

We have Winston Churchill's dentures. These are a pair of dentures that he wore which are very special, because Winston Churchill had had a lisp since he was a child, and these were specially designed to maintain his distinctive speaking style.

Finn: Wow, even part of Winston Churchill himself is in the museum! He had a lisp.

Xu: 原來丘吉爾從小就有說話漏風(fēng)的毛病，lisp. 但這是他的演講風(fēng)格 his distinctive speaking style, 所以為了保留這個(gè)演講效果，他還特地定做了假牙。

Finn: Well, I'm curious, was it very uncomfortable for him to wear these dentures?

Xu: Probably not. He had them for years.

對(duì)了，我還聽到一個(gè)有趣故事，19世紀(jì)的一個(gè)女病人由于生疾病失去了她的鼻子。

Finn: That sounds very sad, Xu Xu.

Xu: Yes, but actually the story has a happy ending.

Finn: Great. 請(qǐng)留意這兩個(gè)詞 syphilis 梅毒，一種疾病，prosthesis, 意思是假體、假肢。

Now this prosthesis belonged to a lady who had suffered from syphilis and she lost her nose because of the disease, and so she had a fake nose made from silver, attached to a glasses frame. She wore this for years, before she married another man, and then she gave the nose back to her doctor, saying that her new husband preferred her without it.

Finn: You're right, it was a lovely story, with a happy ending.

Xu: 真是不可思議。19世紀(jì)的醫(yī)生能給她配上用銀子做的假鼻子。這可是當(dāng)今醫(yī)學(xué)領(lǐng)域研究的前沿?zé)狳c(diǎn)呢！

Finn: A fake nose, now that is amazing. And she gave it back because her husband preferred her without it.

Xu: 她后來把假鼻子還給醫(yī)生了，因?yàn)樗恼煞蚪邮芰怂緛淼臉幼印矍檎鎮(zhèn)ゴ螅?/p>

Finn: 看來你今天收獲頗多呀！

Xu: Hunterian Museum 真的讓我大開眼界，真希望有一天我也能在中國(guó)成立一個(gè)以我自己名字命名的醫(yī)學(xué)博物館，作為溝通醫(yī)學(xué)專業(yè)人士和大眾的橋梁。

Finn: That's a very good idea! Before we finish, let's focus on the new words we learned today. Anatomical.

Xu: 解剖學(xué)的。

Finn: Surgical instruments.

Xu: 手術(shù)器械。

Finn: Dentures.

Xu: 假牙。

Finn: Prosthesis.

Xu: 假體、假肢。
