Changchun, capital of Northeast China’s Jilin province, has seen a boom in its night-time economy – and it has moved in to capitalize on the trend, adopting several measures to encourage the growth of the economy.

In years, night tours have won increasing popularity and has become a key driving force of the local economy, especially in the metropolis, officials said.

According to a report released by the China Tourism Academy, during this year’s Spring Festival holiday, spending in the country during the nighttime accounted for 28.5 percent of the total for the entire day.

Data revealed that in 2018, Changchun saw night-time spending hit 3.33 billion yuan ($472.9 million), up from 1.59 billion yuan the previous year.

The data also showed that food seems more popular at night than during the day, with 89.2 percent of catering spending generated at night time in the city last year.

Barbecues, beers, and all kinds of snacks are popular among Changchun’s residents. People enjoy delicacies at Zhongdong night market, Huadian Street night market, Taipei Avenue night market, and more.

Music fountains with light shows have also proved popular among Changchun residents. The Jingyuetan Music Fountain Light Show began on July 1 at the Jingyuetan National Scenic Area, amusing visitors.

People were also treated to lantern shows in Changchun. More than 100 groups of lanterns are illuminating the 350,000-square-meter exhibition area at Changchun Movie Wonderland, offering a splendid summer night scene for visitors.

To support the growth of the city’s nigh-time business Changchun held a forum, where experts offered suggestions to develop the economy, such as building a night-time landscape belt along the Yitong River, hosting shows on the water and upgrading facilities in business districts.
