The highly anticipated Changchun International Driverless Vehicle Ice and Snow Challenge will be held in Changchun, the capital city of Northeast China's Jilin province, from Jan 12 to 14.

It is expected to attract more than 100 contestants, 30 professional judges and 1,000 guests and spectators.

The first competition of this kind globally, more than 30 top driverless vehicle teams in China will test the tricky roads in frigid North China. The event, which comprises three major activities, will simultaneously allow the testing and commercial exploration of driverless vehicles.

Going forward, Changchun will continue to hold the challenge every year.

The urban ice and snow challenge venue is located at the national intelligent vehicle (North China) pilot zone. The zone's 2.2-kilometer track contains 18 traffic scenarios typical of northern cities in winter.

The first-ever driverless minibus exhibition match will be held at Jingyuetan National Forest Park in Changchun. The venue serves as a great example of a commercial tourism attraction that uses minibuses.

A 13-kilometer cross-country ice and snow rally for driverless vehicles will also be held. The rally will evaluate the autopilot system's durability in a low-temperature environment during winter and automatic driving ability on complex off-road sections. It will also analyze how vehicles function with an unstable network signal.

Winter conditions are a notable gap in the innovation and development process of intelligent vehicles in China.

Changchun's lowest temperature this year will be close to -30 C, offering an excellent opportunity to test for these vehicles' sensing kits, inertial navigation systems, car industrial computers and batteries.
