A delegation of journalists on July 23 visited the city of Baicheng in Northeast China's Jilin province, as part of a media campaign launched there to promote an in-depth understanding of the region and its achievements.

Earlier on Jan 25, the Jilin Provincial Government's work report emphasized that Jilin will innovate and develop new energy sources such as hydrogen, wind, solar and biomass energy and launch the "Three Gorges on Land" project in the province.

New energy industry demonstration parks are set to be developed in the cities of Baicheng and Songyuan.

Baicheng is the country's only local wind power consumption demonstration zone and is a national new energy demonstration city.

Plans are for Baicheng to be developed with an installed capacity of 22.8 million kilowatts of wind power, equivalent to the installed capacity of China's Three Gorges Hydroelectric Power Station.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Baicheng is planning to undertake eight major projects. These include a UHV project to transmit electricity from Jilin to the southern part of the country and a new energy guarantee base in western Jilin – as well as a new energy equipment manufacturing base – with a planned total investment of 323.9 billion yuan ($49.98 billion).

Of this, 171.9 billion yuan is set to be invested during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

Beginning in 2018, Baicheng began developing its hydrogen energy industry and it has since been striving to become the "Hydrogen Valley of North China".

It is understood that Baicheng is moving to become a full industrial chain for hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen transportation and hydrogen use. This is highlighting the development of hydrogen energy equipment, hydrogen fuel cells and vehicles industry – as well as creating a hydrogen energy industrial tree.

Under Baicheng's hydrogen energy development plans from 2021 to 2025, hydrogen production capacity will reach 100,000 metric tons a year, cumulative fixed investment will be 50 billion yuan, while the annual output value will be 20 billion yuan.
