It is the largest natural karst cave in East China, noted for its mysterious, beautiful and grandiose scenery.
Taiji Cave was created by crustal movements some 250 million years ago. It was in the Han (206 BC--AD 220) and Tang (618-907) dynasties that the earliest visitors appeared.
More and more people came to explore the cave in the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. They left behind many inscriptions and poems. A case in point is a stele with three Chinese characters meaning the sound of the footsteps, written by Fan Zhongyan (989-1052), a famous writer of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), in 1015, with a history of nearly 1,000 years.
The scenic area covers an area of 22 square km, with a core area of 2.2 square km. The area of the karst cave open to public extends to some 140,000 square meters. Taiji Cave contains 19 halls and more than 300 magnificent scenic spots.
