Swimming pools in Xiamen will be put under safety and sanitation inspections and tests this summer, according to a meeting jointly held by the Xiamen Sports Bureau and public health authorities on Wednesday.
Recently, the health authorities conducted sample tests on water quality of more than two hundred swimming pools across the city and the results will be published in two weeks. A second round of sample tests will be conducted on those swimming pools that failed the tests or received most complaints in the first round. Those failed to pass the two rounds of tests will be ordered to close for rectification.
Xiamen implemented a system of public swimming pool ratings across the city in 2013. Operators of public swimming pools are required to place the test results of their water quality in prominent positions, which helps consumers understand the sanitary conditions of the swimming pools. People who are enthusiastic about swimming in the summer are also advised to check swimming pools regularly to make sure that the water is healthy. According to experts, a simple way to do this is to look into the pool regularly. Is the water clear? Can you see to the bottom of the pool? Any changes, such as cloudiness, mean that the operator needs to test the water and take steps to improve water quality before anyone go swimming.
In addition to this, a perfectly healthy pool should be odourless, and if the chloramines level has reached a point where they can be smelled, it actually signifies that the pool's water is exceptionally dirty.
