Mayor Su explained that the activity center, although running smoothly nowadays, met some tough difficulties during its preparation stage.

The problem was in money. The construction fund – totaling four million yuan ($635,991) – faced a financing gap even after government funding.

Su said warm-hearted local returnees, who mainly were active in health undertakings outside Cuotou village, contributed a lot to the program.

"I was impressed and moved by their ideas, which are now popular in the village. They felt that rather than risk money on business, why not contribute it to our hometown's development."

The mayor, who previously owned a medical operation in Zhejiang, Fujian's neighboring province, was very familiar with the idea. He has for years been devoted to the village's development, especially the well-being of its elders.

"My wife used to pray for our family, but now, she prays for all our villagers," Su said.

Cuotou is gaining momentum, and thankfully, in a positive direction. The once common failing of local residents in comparing themselves with each other – who has the fancier mansions, cars, and even betrothal gifts – has changed into their vying to contribute more for local development.

Wider village roads have been paved, brighter street lamps are being set up, children now have access to high quality education, and elders have their hearts and minds settled – all these outcomes show that Cuotou is getting better and better.
