Some Chinese painters travelled to Pingtan in Fujian province last April looking for new inspirations, ptnet.cn reports.

Their footprints were all over famous scenic spots like the General's Mountain, Tannan Bay, Phoenix Mountain, Fengwei Wharf and the cluster of stone folk dwellings.

The seascape probably left the deepest impression.

Huang Jinyi, with the Fujian Artists Association, said he is infatuated with the crystal sky and sea as well as the unique steel and wooden ships in Pingtan.

"The sky only appears purple and pink at twilight in extremely clear air. And I've only seen such beautiful sea once in Taiwan," he said.

Tao Xianglian, a painter from Tianjin, echoed Huang's sentiment, saying: "The harmonious colors of the landscapes, such as the sky, island, sea, fishing boats and houses, are perfect for painting."

She also admired Pingtan's fresh air in contrast to that in her hometown. "The smog in Tianjin is so grave that it resulted in a nonstop cough. It is such a blessing to be able to paint here as if I am on vacation. And there is the white, soft sand on the beach."

The deep-rooted religious culture and temples also appealed to the visitors, who said they spent a whole afternoon exploring religious buildings in Pingtan.

The stone houses are another desirable subject to Huang, who refers them to little castles.

"They are simple but wind-resistant. The unique geometry creates a distinguished aesthetic feeling."

"Putting them among local people in real life and endowing them with inspiration will make more people love Pingtan. It is also a great opportunity for academic exchange," said Lin Xinpan, a local painter.
