Nanyang enjoys a predominant geographic location with convenient transportation and advanced communication. The Jiaozuo–Zhicheng Railway stretches from south to north, and the Nanjing–Xi'an Railway crosses from east to west. A new pattern of urban and rural integration development with rational division and functional complementation has formed by taking Dengzhou, Tongbai, Xixia and Xichuan as four bases, relying on small towns and improving modern three–dimensional transportation systems covering highways, railways and aviation.

After the Nanjing–Xi'an Railway was put into use, Nanyang was determined as a national highway transportation hub by the Ministry of Transportation. Nanyang Airport is one of the three biggest civil airports in Henan. There are direct flights from Henan to Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guilin.

A 105–kilometer highway was built in the previous year. A 1,442–kilometer arterial highway was also reconstructed. It takes only 20 minutes to get to the highway from each county. A 7,193–kilometer rural highway was rebuilt. The second phase of the reconstruction and extension project of Nanyang Airport was completed. Five airlines were added. The construction of the Shibuhe reservoir dam was almost finished. Reinforcement works of 264 reservoirs, such as the Yahekou Reservoir, have been completed. Key agricultural infrastructure projects such as water–saving reform in three major irrigation areas have preceded smoothly.

In 2013, the total added value of the transportation, storage and post industry reached 12.18 billion yuan ($1.99 billion), increasing 5.9 percent year–on–year. The total revenue of the postal and telecommunication business was 5.25 billion yuan, an increase of 19.5 percent. The total income of the postal business was 812 million yuan with an increase of 18.0 percent, and telecommunication business revenue reached 4.44 billion yuan with an increase of 19.8 percent. At the end of 2013, the number of local fixed telephone users was 653,100, with 6.26 million mobile users. The popularizing rate of the telephone was 13.61 per 100 people. At the end of the year, there were 723,400 Internet users, an increase of 8.1 percent.

The built–up area of industrial cluster districts in Nanyang in 2013 reached 197.53 million square meters, up 5.9 percent. The main business income of industries above a designated scale in industrial cluster districts reached 189.69 billion yuan, rising 16 percent. The figure accounted for 58.9 percent of Nanyang's total main business income, an increase of 1.4 percent from one year earlier. Its contribution rate to the growth of main business income of industries above a designated size was 69.7 percent. The total profit of industries above a designated scale in industrial cluster districts above a designated size was 10.75 billion yuan, an increase of 12.2 percent.
